The number of colorful specialty license plates on North Carolina cars is causing problems for police officers and traffic cameras.

Division of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Mike Robertson told a transportation legislative committee Tuesday that 265,000 vehicles have special plates that highlight groups, hobbies or causes.

More than 40 of the 183 active specialty plate styles don't use the white "First in Flight" backdrop that's standard for most registered vehicles. DMV says police along with red light and toll road cameras have a harder time reading numbers on plates with colored backgrounds.

The Legislature could restrict specialty designs, but plates such as the Blue Ridge Parkway tag with a yellow backdrop are among the most popular.
